The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, yesterday highlighted the importance of Kiswahili in communication between peoples and in the liberation struggles of African countries, particularly of Mozambique.
The Mozambican head of state made this assessment in a first virtual forum of international celebration of the Kiswahili language of July 7th, whose core activities took place in the Tanzanian capital, Dar-es-Salaam.
He noted firstly that, with more than 200 million speakers, Kiswahili was the most internationally recognized African language.
Nyusi made history by speaking in Kiswahili at the event, which is sponsored by theUnited Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), together with the presidents of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye.
According to President Nyusi, Kiswahili continues to serve as an important instrument for the reconstruction of African personality and identity.
Nyusi called for the ongoing dissemination of Kiswahili as a vehicle for the transmission of ideas and technical-scientific innovations driving the development of Africa and humanity.
The head of state also congratulated Kiswahili speakers, particularly in Tanzania, for their immeasurable contribution to the defence and promotion of Kiswahili as an intangible heritage of humanity.

The celebration results from the decision taken by UNESCO, on 23 November 2021, during the 41st session of member states, to declare 7 July as World Kiswahili Day, making it the first African language to be celebrated by the United Nations.
