The family of José Eduardo dos Santos on Friday asked for respect for his privacy at a time when the medical condition of Angola’s former head of state remains “critical and delicate.
“The family of José Eduardo dos Santos thanks all the messages of affection, support and the prayers they have received, and requests that, at this very difficult time, his privacy be respected,” said a statement sent to Lusa on behalf of the family.
The children are grateful for “the recognition, the high degree of esteem, the interest expressed in his health and well-being, as well as the historical importance that many Angolans and Africans recognise in José Eduardo dos Santos (former president of the Republic of Angola),” but note that the moment is sensitive.
“On 23 June 2022, in Barcelona (Spain), José Eduardo dos Santos suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest” and, “after being rescued by a medical team, he was taken to a hospital in that city, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit,” the children explain.
The medical team that “accompanies José Eduardo dos Santos continues to monitor his state of health and the neurological complications that resulted from the cardiorespiratory arrest” and has been “performing additional tests, and his clinical condition is critical and delicate,” the statement said.
The “family continues to follow, permanently, all the evolution of José Eduardo dos Santos’ health condition, together with the medical team” and thanks all the messages of affection, support and prayers that have been received.
However, “it requests that, at this tough time, his privacy be respected,” the statement said, distributed a day after Angola’s foreign minister, Téte António, visited the health unit in Barcelona.
