Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday guaranteed that public and private institutions are operating fully in Ancuabe district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, despite terrorist attacks earlier in the month.
Nyusi visited Nanduli, the first village attacked by the jihadists on 5 June, to see the situation for himself.
Addressing a military parade in Nanduli, Nyusi told the troops “I’m not going to speak much, because I know that you, the Defence and Security Forces, are here on the ground, and others are outside to guarantee security”.
Cited by Radio Mozambique, Nyusi denied reports on social media that Nanduli is deserted and that local institutions have been paralyzed by the presence of terrorists. On the contrary, he had seen with his own eyes that education and health services were functioning
“I found children studying and the health post functioning normally, because of your actions”, he told the parade. He added that he was visiting Nanduli to express his solidarity, and to see for himself the current situation in the district.
“Protect the district, protect the public, protect the economy”, he instructed the defence forces.
In his visit to the Nanduli health post he encouraged the health professionals to continue to assist the local population. He was pleased to find the health post spotlessly clean, even though nobody had advance notice of his visit.
Meanwhile, according to a report in Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”, the families of two workers from the company Grafex, who were murdered by the terrorists, have not yet been able to recover their bodies.
The two men worked as guards on an Ancuabe graphite mine that has not yet opened, and the jihadists beheaded them. Grafex has offered to send a vehicle to the mine to pick up the bodies, but that depends on the defence and security forces providing a military escort.
Another Cabo Delgado district that has recently come under attack is Mecufi. On Thursday, the provincial governor, Valige Tauabo, visited the district and confirmed the raids. In Macuaia village, the attackers looted two shops, but there were no reports of any deaths. However, frightened villagers abandoned Macuaia, and sought safety elsewhere.
A note from Tauabo’s office said that “right now, the defence and security forces are pursuing the criminals”.
With the confirmation of the Mecufi attacks, the number of Cabo Delgado districts that have suffered terrorist raids has risen to 13, out of a total of 17.
