A daily fine of 300 meticais is all that Nelson Armando, an agent of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, must pay for his involvement in the death of Abdul Razak, the fourth section of the Judicial Court of the City of Beira has ruled.
It is the outcome of the case of two police agents who beat a citizen to death in the Munhava area of Beira city in 2020.
The court sentenced Nelson Armando to two years in prison converted into a fine.
The other police officer involved, Juvêncio Matavele, was sentenced to six years in prison, to be served in jail. He was not present at the trial, allegedly because he is in Cabo Delgado fighting terrorists.
Because the pair committed the crime while on duty, the court transferred to the state liability to pay one million meticais in compensation to the family of the deceased.
Abdul Razak was beaten to death when he tried to film the two agents threatening a group of teenagers for failing to comply with Covid-19 regulations on his phone.
