Volume of cargo handled in Port of Beira decreases 5% due to Ukraine war

The volume of cargo handled at the Port of Beira fell 5% from March to the beginning of June, compared to the same period in the last two years. The decrease is being attributed mainly to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the newspaper ‘O País’, the Port of Beira last year handled a record 278,000 containers, compared to 255,000 in 2020. Also, in 2021, the general cargo terminal handled 3.3 million tons, against 3.1 million tons registered in 2020.

In view of these constraints, the administrator of Cornelder de Moçambique, the Port of Beira operator, said that new cargo handling equipment and a computer system called C-Gate, an investment estimated at around US$10 million, would inject new dynamism into the handling of cargo at the important port, which serves the hinterland countries, among others.

Regarding the C-Gate computer system, the official said that it uses artificial intelligence and is able to automate the access of trucks to the port in real time.

The new equipment went into operation on Friday, June 10, at a ceremony led by the Minister of Transport and Communications.
