Two people have recently died in crocodile attacks in Mahelane, Namaacha district, Maputo province.
The victims were attacked by the reptiles on the banks of the Umbeluzi River, where they had their ‘machambas’ [vegetable gardens].
Mahelane ‘Chefe de Localidade’ Emília Mondlane said that, in addition to injuring and killing people, crocodiles were responsible for the death of cattle and goats in the area.
Emília Mondlane further reported that one of the crocodiles, which had terrorised the villages of Mahelane, Michangulene and Mafavuque, was recently killed by volunteer hunters.
