The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday reported a further 22 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease.
According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, 12 of the new cases were women and 10 were men. All were Mozambican citizens. The youngest was a new-born baby, and the oldest was aged 68.
The great majority were from the south – nine from Maputo province, seven from Maputo city, and four from Gaza. There was also one case from Cabo Delgado and one from Nampula.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,325,189 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 671 of them in the previous 24 hours.
649 of these tests yielded negative results, while the 22 positive cases brought the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 225,648.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be infected with the coronavirus) fell from 4.59 per cent on Wednesday to 3.28 per cent on Thursday.
The Ministry reported no deaths on Thursday, and so the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remains 2,203.
One Covid-19 patient was discharged from hospital in Maputo city on Thursday, and no new cases were admitted. Three patients remained under medical care in the Covid-19 wards, one in Maputo and two in Matola. Two of these patients are in intensive care, receiving supplementary oxygen.
There were also no recoveries from Covid-19 on Thursday. The total number of recoveries thus remains 223,319, which is 98.97 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 100 on Wednesday to 122 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 48; Maputo province, 40; Gaza, 12; Cabo Delgado, eight; Sofala, four; Inhambane, four; Nampula, three; Niassa, two; and Manica, one. There were no active cases in Zambezia or Tete.
The Ministry release also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 14,725 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The total number vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,168,249. This is 93.2 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
