The commander-in-chief of the Mozambican police said today that five persons who were kidnapped in the first quarter of this year in the country are still in captivity and urged the corporation to work more with the communities for information on suspicious residences.
According to official police accounts, there were “six cases of kidnappings in the country” recorded in the first quarter and, of these, “we have only one case in which the victim is back with the family”, said Bernardino Rafael, during the presentation ceremony of the new commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo province.
The commander-in-chief wants more commitment from the agents in locating the victims and holding the kidnappers accountable, suggesting, therefore, that each agent “works more with the community in their residential area”.
“In Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo, there are many houses no one knows who they belong to. During the day there is no one, but at night a person shows up there. So, we have to work with the community” to understand what is happening, said Bernardino Rafael.
Rafael also said that the involvement of members of the police in the kidnappings “stains the corporation”, reiterating that he will “fight energetically” the offending agents.
