The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) is calling for a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17 to 12%.
The MDM points out that the cost of basic necessities, public transport and other basic social services, could be reduced with the application of this measure.
This was the position laid out in Maputo this Wednesday by MDM president Luthero Simango at a press conference called to analyse the political, economic and social situation in the country.
Simango also said that the MDM was against churches being made liable for taxes.
The MDM leader further spoke about the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, serving for a third term, stating that the MDM was against it, and that Mozambique’s Constitution stipulates that the matter must be decided by referendum.
Simango however noted that another term with Filipe Nyusi as leader of Frelimo was a different issue, and one internal to the party and a matter for its members.
