Free Grades 1 to 7 text books are now available in schools in Beira, according to the director of District Services for Education, Youth and Technology, José Chimbia.
Chimbia explained that the late arrival of the teaching material was due to several factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which had made production and transport difficult.
After their arrival, Chimbia said, the sector had tried to deliver them to schools to mitigate the effect of the delay on the teaching and learning process.
He noted that, while textbooks were not available, students and teachers had relied on the Ministry of Education and Human Development internet platform to ensure that the educational process was not affected.
According to our source, the sector received 32,000 books for 1st and 2nd grade, 16,000 of which were for Portuguese (subject) and the same number for Mathematics.
For Grade 3, Chimbia said that 15,800 manuals for all subjects had arrived, while for Grade 4, 7,000, and for Grade 5, at least 7,500 books had arrived.
Grade 6 was receiving 87,500 books, and Grade 7, 6,000, to which would be added to the remainder of the previous year.
One of the challenges highlighted out Chimbia relates to the Grade 6 book, which contains new contents that will be taught by only one teacher.
According to the director, in addition to the books, the sector received 3,500 subject guides for teachers in all schools in the region covering Grades 1 to 7.
Distribution, Chimbia said, was proceeding smoothly, the education sector having for this purpose the support of partners who had made themselves available to help.
Delivery of books to schools was in the final stage, Chimbia revealed, having reached 90%, and was expected to have been completed by the end of the week.
Chimbia explained that the Grades 1 and 2 books are non-returnable, unlike the Grade 3 to 7 books, which require greater conservation so that they can be used for students in the following school years.
In the meantime, he appealed to parents and guardians to help their children keep their books in good condition by covering them or adopting other means of protection.
