Mozambique is well on track for election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, whose vote will take place on June 9 at the UN General Assembly.
The conviction was expressed to ‘Notícias’ on Monday by António Macheve, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MINEC), moments after a Mozambican delegation participated in a United Nations Security Council 2022 Election Briefing promoted by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFNUA).
“Our country is a testament of #UNSC as a force for good. We prioritize: equitable, resilient, collaborative world for all, protection of women, children + vulnerable groups, nexus of resource scarcity + climate change,”– Amb. Speaking exclusively to the Noticias, Macheve explained that the arguments presented at this meeting were enough for the country to be elected to office after this meeting.
“Our analysis is that the national application is very well on track, and there is a favourable environment for our election as non-permanent member of the Security Council on June 9,” he said.
Among the factors that weigh in the country’s favour is the fact that Mozambique is so far the only candidate from the African continent, and has the support of the African Union. If this happens, our country will replace Kenya at the UN Security Council.
Regarding this, the MINEC spokesman explained that the regions of Southern and Eastern Africa alternate as non-permanent members of the Security Council.
“So Kenya will leave on December 31 of this year, and then our country could take over the seat on January 1, 2023,” Macheve said.
Closing remarks from Mozambique Mission: “Focus on importance of negotiating role both within the council and outside of it because we believe in the UN Charter’s ability to address today’s int’l community’s challenges.” #UNSCElections

Answer from Mozambique Mission: “Matter of colonialism/self-determination was addressed by General Assembly with no general consensus. Let us give true attention to the role and work of the #GA that are not addressed by #UNSC.” #UNSCElections

Questions from Amb Zacarias of @Portugal_UN: “What are suggestions for enhancing transparency and efficiency of #UNSC work? To Mozambique, as only African candidate, what avenues do you have to further the nexus of climate change and peace and security?” #UNSCElections
