A Jindal Africa coal train bound for the Port of Beira coming from Tete derailed on Wednesday night on the Sena line between Derunde and Semacueza in Muanza district, Sofala province.
The incident, involving a composition consisting of two locomotives and 43 wagons, resulted in substantial physical damage to the railway.
CFM-Centre railway director Boaventura confirmed the accident, acknowledging that traffic had been momentarily interrupted.
A crane mobilised from Beira took more than five hours to remove the train, and rail traffic was reopened after 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, when the Beira-Marromeu passenger train, which had been held up at Dondo railway station, was again able to make headway.
A commission of inquiry to determine the cause of the accident has been constituted, but preliminary results indicate a probable deficiency in one of the wagons.
Mahave noted that this is the second derailment on the Sena line this year. The first case occurred in the Doa area, Tete province, coinciding with heavy rains in the northern part of the Zambezi, and caused an interruption in circulation of about seven days.
The CFM-Centre railway director reaffirmed that line maintenance took place regularly, and apologised for the inconvenience to passengers.
