A young man was kidnaped on Tuesday morning outside his residence, in a prime area of Maputo City. The victim, who is almost 24 years old, is the son of a Mozambican businessman of Asian origin.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) still have no leads on the kidnappers.
“This citizen was approached as he was leaving his residence: two light vehicles were already waiting for him right in front of his house and it was just as he was going to leave that he was intercepted, one vehicle therefore blocked the rear [of the victim’s vehicle] and the other the front. and they forcibly managed to drag him to the criminals’ vehicle,” said the spokesman for the PRM in Maputo City, Leonel Muchina.
A citizen who tried to help the victim was shot and wounded by the criminals. “We also regret to inform that a citizen who had rushed to help the victim was shot in the foot with ammunition fired from a weapon presumed to be an AK47,” Muchina said.
“The perpetrators managed to flee and what can be advanced at the moment is that we are associated with the other efforts that will work to clarify this act,” the PRM spokesperson added.
Leonel Muchina further declined to say whether or not the kidnappers had contacted the victim’s family. “We cannot provide any information of this nature because it is confidential information. Because what really matters to us isto restore this citizen to freedom and, naturally, to capture the criminals. And any information [released] that may lead to the non-capture of these criminals…. We reserve the right not to proceed [disclosing information], or else risk compromising any subsequent work.”
The abduction took place at around eleven o’clock on Tuesday morning.
