Mozambique: Government failed to repay 3.4 billion meticais of debt

Measures undertaken towards restructuring of the state business sector and also to the reinforcement of its supervision are contributing to an increase in state revenue, with the public coffers collecting around six billion meticais in 2021 [around US$93.9 million], against 512 million meticais in 2016 [around US$8 million].
The data were shared by the Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane on Thursday in Parliament, answering the insistence questions of the deputies of the Assembly of the Republic.
According to Prime Minister Maleiane, the reforms do not mean the privatisation of state-owned and affiliated companies. The Prime Minister that, based on the criteria established by law, these enterprises are divided into strategic, structuring and non-strategic.
“We are restructuring strategic and structuring companies, with a view to making them profitable and sustainable, the non-strategic ones are in the process of being sold or liquidated, as is the case with Correios de Moçambique [Postal Services],” Maleiane explained.
The Prime Minister said that, in the case of Correios de Moçambique, a liquidation commission was created with the aim of ascertaining the assets and liabilities so as to later settle the company’s debts, prioritising the State, the company’s workers and the company’s creditors.
