Mozambique’s state-owned national power utility Electricidade de Moçambique (Mozambique Electricity – EDM) owes its suppliers around US$150 million (about 9.5 billion meticais), according to Electrification and Projects Administrator, Joaquim Ou-Chim.
Ou-Chim told journalists this on Tuesday(March 29) after a meeting between the EDM board and the Mozambican Parliament’s Planning and Budget Commission.
The debt was contracted with public and private institutions, and there are constant negotiations over its repayment.
“We have a debt on our side with our suppliers, especially of energy. As is well known, about 80% of our (operating) costs come from purchasing electricity. We did owe energy suppliers US$400 million (25.5 billion meticais) but, at the moment, the figure stands at around US$150 million. A management effort is being made to repay this debt,” he said.
