Over the weekend, six people were arrested in the central Mozambican city of Chimoio on suspicion of the sale of medicines stolen from the national health service.
It is assumed that the medicines were taken from stores by employees for sale in the markets around the city.
Speaking to journalists during his regular press briefing, police spokesperson Leonardo Colher said that thirty kilogrammes of medicines were seized. Among the drugs recovered were anti-malarial tablets, antibiotics, painkillers, anti-retrovirals, and rehydration salts.
Commenting on the deplorable conditions from which the medicines were recovered, Colher stressed, “we will not stop this fight against the illegal sale of medicines. We want to end this practice because not only is it illegal but it also poses a threat to public health”.
He added that the police are still working to apprehend the others involved in this criminal network.
This is not the first time that police have taken action against the illegal sale of medicines. Recently, seven people were arrested for a similar crime after being caught selling stolen drugs in the Chimoio markets “Feira” and “38 Milimetros”. They are still in police custody awaiting trial.
