The Ressano Garcia International Mineral Transit Railway Terminal (dry port) in Moamba district, Maputo province swang into full operation this Wednesday.
The main objective of the new terminal is to reduce the number of trucks crossing the Ressano Garcia border and making their way to the port of Maputo.
The inter-modal facility, located at the country’s largest border post, will transfer cargo currently ferried by trucks onto the railways, increasing Ressano Garcia’s mineral handling capacity to 50,000 tonnes per month.
One of the dry port’s objectives is to decongest National Road Number Four (EN4), which connects Mozambique to South Africa, says National Director of Logistics and Development of Private Sector Transport, Ambrósio Sitoe.
Heavy goods vehicles cause enormous damage to roads, and the Mozambican authorities have long worked towards the goods being transported by rail.

The terminal, situated about 98 kilometres from Maputo, is expected to remove around 300 heavy goods vehicles a day from the EN4, en route to the ports of Maputo and Matola, and can handle an average of 17 trains per month, each with up to 60 wagons.
The facility results from a partnership between Mozambique Ports and Railways- CFM and the South African company The Logistics Group (TLG) which currently manages the Matola Cargo Terminal as well as KM4 customs terminals at Ressano Garcia.
