Mozambique: Sixth round of municipal elections scheduled for October 11, 2023

The Mozambican Government has scheduled the sixth round of municipal elections for the 11th of October, 2023. These elections will take place, for the second consecutive time, under a new legislative approach, that is, with the election of mayors via the head of list of the winning party in each municipality.

The decision on the date of the elections was taken during the 8th Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers in Maputo on Tuesday (22-03).
The elections will take place in the current 53 municipalities in Mozambique. These are as follows:
In the south:
- The city of Maputo, the capital of the country, the city of Matola and the towns of Boane, Manhiça and Namaacha, in the province of Maputo;
- The cities of Xai-Xai, Chokwe and Chibuto, as well as in the towns of Mandlakaze, Macia and Bilene, in Gaza province; and
- In the cities of Inhambane, Maxixe and Vilankulo, as well as in the towns of Massinga and Quissico, in the province of Inhambane.
In the central area, elections will take place in:
- The cities of Beira and Dondo, as well as in the towns of Nhamatanda, Gorongosa and Marromeu, in Sofala province;
- The cities of Chimoio and Manica, as well as in the towns of Sussundenga, Catandica and Gondola, in the province of Manica;
- The cities of Tete and Moatize, as well as in the towns of Ulongue and Nhamaiabue, in Tete province; and
- The cities of Quelimane and Mocuba and also in the towns of Gurue, Alto Malocue and Maganja da Costa, in the province of Zambézia.
Finally, in the north:
- The cities of Nampula, Nacala, Angoche and Ilha de Moçambique, in addition to the towns of Malema, Ribawe and Monapo, in Nampula province;
- The cities of Pemba and Montepuéz, as well as in the towns of Chiúre, Mueda and Mocimboa da Praia, in the province of Cabo Delgado; and
- The cities of Lichinga and Cuamba, as well as in Marrupa, Metangula and Mandimba, in the province of Niassa.
