Two people died over the weekend in Sofala province, central Mozambique, following flooding caused by a depression that followed cyclone Gombe, said the spokesman for the Institute of Disaster Management (INGD) on Monday.
Germano Amado told Lusa that with the two deaths declared on Sunday in the outskirts of the city of Beira, the number of deaths caused by the passage of Gombe and the depression that followed it had risen to 59 and the number of injured was now 82 in the central and northern regions of the country.
The rain that fell over Sofala last weekend affected some 20,000 people and forced over 1,700 families to abandon their homes. They are now in three transit centres created for this purpose.
Cyclone Gombe had already caused death and destruction in the northern province of Nampula, where 53 people lost their lives, followed by the central province of Zambezia, with four deaths, and Sofala, with two deaths.
Mozambique faces several storms each year during the cyclone and rainy season, which runs from October to April.
