The presidents of Mozambique and Portugal on Saturday inaugurated the Aga Khan Academy in the city of Matola. The inauguration took place within the scope of the Portuguese president’s visit to Mozambique, which ended yesterday.
In his speech, the Mozambican head of state observed that this is the second Aga Khan academy in Mozambique, and stems from a partnership which focuses on the country’s development.
“The knowledge that will come out of this academy must be translated into tools capable of boosting the socio-economic development of our country,” President Nyusi told an audience of national and foreign dignitaries.
Filipe Nyusi highlighted the Aga Khan Foundation’s commitment to the business sector in Mozambique, citing as an example its investment in the Polana Serena Hotel in Maputo.
Speaking in turn, the Portuguese president said that “the most important thing is the young people present here; they are the reason for this academy’s being. There is no academy without students, without youth”.
Marcelo de Sousa recalled that there are millions of children and young people in the world without access to an academy, stressing a great responsibility falls on those Mozambicans who access an academy like that. “To whom much is given, much is required,” he observed.
Meanwhile, Prince Rahim Aga Khan noted that the Aga Khan Academy is guided by the principles of pluralism and humanism. The Matola academy already has students from 28 countries, and teaches in both Portuguese and English as a way of covering more countries.
According to information released during the event, of the 18 academies of this type existing in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, the Matola complex is the third that the Aga Khan group has built from scratch in accordance with the international model defined by the Foundation.
