France and TotalEnergies should make a decision in the coming days regarding the oil and gas group’s business in Russia, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Tuesday.
“There is a question of principles,” Le Maire told France Info radio. He added that he would be discussing Russia with both the head of TotalEnergies and French energy group Engie .
Le Maire said the European Union and United States were unleashing an “economic war” on Moscow that would “provoke the collapse of the Russian economy”.
Rival oil majors Shell, BP and Norway’s Equinor have said they would exit positions in resource-rich Russia, piling pressure on other Western companies with stakes in Russian energy projects.
More Western companies are expected to pull out of Russia on Tuesday as sanctions tighten and a huge military convoy approaches the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
