The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, is participating in the Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), an international organisation which gathers leading gas producing countries to increase coordination and collaboration among members. The 6th GECF Summit is taking place from 21 to 22 February, 2022, in Doha, State of Qatar.
The GECF’s main objective is to exchange experience and information and to coordinate between member countries on the need for independent planning and management in pursuit of sustainable, environmentally conscious and efficient use of natural gas resources.
President Nyusi is accompanied by Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Ernesto Max Tonela, plus members of staff of the Presidency of the Republic and other state institutions.
Mozambique is attending the forum at a time when preparations are underway for the country to become one of the world’s biggest exporters of natural gas, with projects being developed in the Rovuma Basin in Cabo Delgado province.
At the moment, the country produces natural gas in small quantities in the regions of Pande and Temane, in Inhambane, and exports it to the South African market.
Although the country is not yet a major gas exporter, recent official statistics published by the Global Outlook 2050 foresee Mozambique becoming the fifth largest exporter of gas in the world by the middle of this century.
‘Notícias’ has established that Mozambique’s participation in this high-level meeting serves its strategic goal of becoming part of the GECF platform, currently comprising 18 members, with the aim of stimulating the sector.
Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, recently met the secretary general of the GECF, Mohamed Hamel, who, on the occasion, highlighted the remarkable potential of natural gas for the economic future of Mozambique.

Mohamed Hamel assured Minister Tonela on the occasion of the GECF’s full support for Mozambique joining the platform as a future major gas exporter.
In the same vein, Max Tonela noted that the Mozambican government recognised the GECF as a credible intergovernmental platform for the gas sector.
For some years now, Mozambique has been discovering huge amounts of natural gas, making the country the owner of some of the world’s largest reserves of this resource.
