Emerging from the closed door meeting with the President, Ms Machel, who was speaking through an interpreter said her visit sought to brief President Mnangagwa on the Chongoene port project.
Machel chairs Mozambique STT, a company working on the construction of the US$324 million Chongoene deepwater port.
She said the Port project was her late father’s dream, noting that the region is in need of an efficient transport system due to the vast minerals which require transportation.
The Chongoene Development Corridor Project which has an estimated investment of 3 billion United States dollars, also involves a railway connection to the Limpopo corridor.
Ms Machel was accompanied by Ambassador Chis Mutsvangwa who said the plans to set up the port come at a time when Zimbabwe is developing a steel plant project in Manhize, Chivhu.

Southern African countries are working together to make the project a success. So far the project has secured funding & feasibility studies are underway. Zimbabwe is geo-strategically positioned at the Centre of Southern Africa & thus key in operationalizing the project.
