Zambia has made progress in reducing modern day slavery by ratifying the International Labour Organisation Protocol on Abolition of Forced Labour.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda said in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia when he handed over the Lusaka communique to ILO General Secretary that the country is making strides in ensuring that the protocol is implemented.
This is contained in a statement issued by first secretary for press and tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia, Naomi Chulu.
Mr Shamenda said many countries are battling with contemporary forms of slavery and human trafficking. He said 21 million people around the world are being held in modern slavery, and that there is need to fight the scourge through the implementation of human rights protocols.
Mr Shamenda said Zambia will lead the campaign in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Africa as a whole to ensure the elimination of forced labour.
He urged other countries to join the campaign by adopting and ratifying the protocol.
