Vodacom has announced a change in its senior leadership, after nine (9) years with Jerry Mobbs at the helm. Mobbs joined the mobile phone company in 2012, and guided Vodacom on a growth path, producing results which included becoming the market leader, accelerating network coverage, the launch and positioning of M-Pesa as the main mobile wallet in the country, the launch of the digital inclusion project “Faz Crescer”, an increase in the number of women in the leadership of the company, provision of support to communities in various adversities, including Cyclone Idai, the launch of policy innovations in the Mozambican market, such as the maternity policy with six months of leave for mothers and fathers, a quick and effective response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and many other milestones.
“For me, it was a great privilege to lead this group,” Jerry Mobbs said, “and the greatest source of pride and satisfaction was that we managed to transform Vodacom into the Number 1 operator in Mozambique. It was an objective achieved thanks to the work and commitment of the entire team. Of course, there are still many opportunities for improvement to continue to promote the excellent service that Vodacom Customers deserve. For my part, I can only sincerely thank everyone with whom I had the honour of sharing these nine years, and wish Vodacom continuing success.”
Simon Karikari was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of Vodacom. He comes from Millicom Tigo in Tanzania, where he was CEO. During his time there, Karikari was instrumental in supporting the Milicom Group in its mergers and acquisitions strategy, and led the sale of Millicom’s operations in Tanzania to Axian. Karikari holds a BA in accounting from the University of Botswana, and is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
“I intend to continue the work developed, and use my experience in the telecommunications area to add value to Vodacom. It is a big responsibility and a big challenge, but I feel confident in the whole team,” Karikari declared.
