Artists from the city of Lichinga, the capital of Niassa province in northern Mozambique, will on Saturday deliver a variety of goods to victims of armed attacks in Mecula, a district in that part of the country, initiative coordinator Santos Calisto told Lusa on Monday.
Calisto, the leader of the band Massukos, the most famous in northern Mozambique, and coordinator of the ‘Juntos por Mecula’ initiative, said that bags of corn, soap, school supplies and clothing would be donated to the government of Niassa to be channelled to victims of violence in Mecula.

“As inhabitants of Niassa, and with the influence we have as artists, we could not remain indifferent to the suffering of our brothers in Mecula,” the musician declared.
Added to this support is a ton of corn flour, donated by a trader in Cuamba, the second most important city in Niassa, Calisto added.
The support being delivered on Saturday was given by individual donors as well as public and private entities.
The Massukos leader said that the initiative follows other humanitarian actions spearheaded by artists from Niassa, most recently the mobilisation of essential goods for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19 in the province.
In addition to musicians, the Juntos por Mecula movement includes actors, visual artists and other artists.
Since late 2021, Mecula has been the scene of attacks by armed groups that the Mozambican government assumes have fled the neighbouring province of Cabo Delgado after Mozambican and international forces put the insurgents there under pressure.
The attacks forced the flight of 3,700 inhabitants.
