Police in Tsangano district, Tete province, have detained a father and son pair on suspicion of having collaborated with the group of armed Renamo men who ransacked the pharmacy of the hospital in the village of Banga on July 6.
The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday by the commander of the PRM in Tete, Fabião Nhancololo, who said that the prosecution was being managed at the district level.
When asked about the search operations set in motion after the robbery, Nhancololo said: “There are already at least two detainees [in custody].”
Tsangano administrator Eugénio Muchanga confirmed that the hospital was still closed after the abduction and release of two nurses by the gang.
“The nurses are badly shaken. They walked a long distance and were ordered to return. They say they were not beaten, but are psychologically affected,” he said.
Of the male detainees, Muchanga said that they “are being interrogated because there is information that they hosted armed Renamo men on the night of the 6th of this month. We think that, if their involvement is proved, they may be liable,” he said.
The administrator also said that Renamo men shot dead a policeman during the incident.
“I can confirm the death of a police officer. His death happened when they were shooting to intimidate the population, prior to stealing the medicines,” he said.
He asserted that the health centre is scheduled to reopen within the next few days. “We are working towards the nurses resuming work, because the people need their healthcare,” he said.
