The Mozambican health authorities on Sunday reported that, for the second consecutive day, there have been no deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease.
Thus the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remains 2,183.
According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,236,564 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 972 of them in the previous 24 hours.
942 of these tests yielded negative results, while 30 people tested positive for the virus. This brought the total number of positive cases to 224,339.
Of the new cases identified on Sunday, 16 were women and 14 were men. The great majority of these cases (21 – 70 per cent) were in Maputo city. There were also three cases in Maputo province, three in Niassa, and one each in Tete, Manica and Sofala, No positive cases were diagnosed in the other five provinces.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be infected with the virus) was almost unchanged – rising very slightly from 3.08 per cent on Saturday to 3.09 per cent on Sunday.
In the same 24 hour period, four Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (two in Maputo and two in Tete),while three new cases were admitted (in Maputo, Tete and Niassa).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 29 on Saturday to 28 on Sunday. 12 of these patients (42.9 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also six patients in Niassa, three in Manica, two in Nampula, and one each in Zambezia, Tete, Inhambane, Gaza and Matola. No Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in either Sofala or Cabo Delgado.
The Ministry release reported 223 recoveries from the disease (152 in Maputo province and 71 in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 217,112, which is 96.8 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 5,233 on Saturday to 5,040 on Sunday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 3,577 (71 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 418; Cabo Delgado, 198; Zambezia, 166; Gaza, 156; Niassa, 123; Manica, 115; Inhambane, 87; Tete, 82; Nampula, 78; and Sofala, 40.
The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 12,674 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number fully vaccinated to 9,804,872. This is 64.5 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
The highest vaccination rates are in Nampula (where an extraordinary 98 per cent of the target figure has been inoculated), Manica (71.2 per cent) and Cabo Delgado (70.6 per cent). Lagging behind are Sofala (41.2 per cent), and Maputo province (46.5 per cent).
