Mozambique: Japan funds construction of health center on Idugo Island

The Mozambican health authorities on Sunday announced a further 3,506 recoveries from the Covid-19 respiratory disease – 3,283 in Maputo province, 169 in Maputo city, and 54 in Zambezia.
This brings the total number of recoveries to 212,070 – which is 94.8 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,223,311 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,176 of them in the previous 24 hours.
1,103 of the tests yielded negative results, and 73 people tested positive for the virus. The number of people in Mozambique who have tested positive now stands at 233,811
Of the new cases identified on Sunday, 37 were women and 36 were men. The province worst hit was Maputo city, with 37 cases (50.7 per cent), There were ten cases in Inhambane, eight in Nampula, seven in Niassa, three each in Cabo Delgado, Sofala, and Maputo province, one in Tete and one in Gaza. No positive cases were reported from Zambezia or Manica.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be infected by the virus) rose from 4.78 per cent on Saturday to 6.21 per cent on Sunday.
Over the same 24 hour period, nine Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (six in Maputo, two in Niassa and one in Cabo Delgado), while four new cases were admitted, all in Maputo.
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 75 on Saturday to 67 on Sunday. 31 of these patients (46.3 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also eight patients in Niassa, five each in Tete, Inhambane and Gaza, four in Manica, three in Nampula, three in Sofala, and one each in Cabo Delgado, Zambezia, and Matola.
The Ministry reported a further three deaths from Covid-19, all of them Mozambican men aged between 60 and 70. The three men all died in Maputo city. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,170.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 12,003 on Saturday to 8,567 on Sunday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 3,767 (44 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,328; Zambezia, 496; Inhambane, 435; Niassa, 391; Gaza, 331; Manica, 292; Cabo Delgado, 242; Tete, 174; Nampula, 60; and Sofala, 51.
The Ministry release added that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 50,800 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number of people fully vaccinated against the disease to 9,489,700. This is 62.4 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
The number of people who have received a booster shot of the vaccine has risen to 30.970.
