Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday requested diplomatic support for Mozambique’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
The request was made in Maputo when Nyusi received the credential from six ambassadors and one high commissioner: Francisco Branco of East Timor; Constant-Serge Bouda of Congo-Brazzaville; Fahad bin Abdullah Al-Issa of Saudi Arabia; Pham Hoang Kim of Vietnam; Choi Won Sok of South Korea; Walid Elmeligy of Egypt; and Wezi Moy of Malawi.
Speaking moments after the ceremony, Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo explained that President Nyusi had made the request for support for the Mozambican bid for a Security Council sear during the ceremonies. She added that the President had also expressed his government’s willingness to develop and strengthen ties with the countries.
The UN Security Council is composed of 15 members, ten of which are non-permanent and elected for two-year terms. In June five of these positions are up for election with the successful candidates taking up the post on 1 January 2023.
Macamo added that Nyusi had stressed to Ambassador Branco the need to proactively implement the cooperation instruments that Mozambique and East Timor have adopted. He told Ambassador Bouda of his desire to promote and combine synergies and partnerships in the diplomatic, economic, and social spheres and involve the business communities in Mozambique and Congo-Brazzaville.
To the Saudi Ambassador, President Nyusi stressed the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation between the two countries to speed up Saudi direct investment in areas such as agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, and industry.
He encouraged the Vietnamese Ambassador to consolidate bilateral cooperation in the fields of technical assistance, training, capacity building, and technology transfer.
Addressing the Ambassador of South Korea, President Nyusi recalled his recent working visit to the country and pointed out that the recent arrival of the floating liquefied natural gas platform built in a Korean shipyard represents a major milestone in relations between the two countries.
The President told the Egyptian Ambassador that the fruitful talks that he had held in Cairo in 2019 with his counterpart President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, had launched relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
To the new High Commissioner of Malawi, President Nyusi highlighted the importance of relations of friendship and solidarity, as well as cooperation between the two countries and peoples both bilaterally and within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
