The Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) of Mozambique, the largest business organisation, said that the easing of restrictions related to the prevention of Covid-19 could boost the recovery of economic activity in the country.
The CTA said the reopening of beaches and the resumption without restrictions of business establishment hours will give “a breath of fresh air” to enterprises and bring “hope for a gradual resumption of activities,” reads a statement published on the confederation’s website.
“The President’s decision will motivate the recovery of the tourism sector,” the CTA stressed.
The main Mozambican beaches had been closed since 6 October to prevent crowds spreading Covid-19, a measure contested by the CTA which considered it “an obstacle to the resumption of tourism.”
In the statement, Mozambican employers said they would continue with actions aimed at strengthening the sector, noting that the easing of restrictions was the result of “good dialogue” between the tourism department and the government.
On Wednesday, President Filipe Nyusi eased restrictions on preventing Covid-19 and reduced the number of days of mandatory home quarantine from 14 to seven.
Mozambique has recorded 2,146 deaths and 221,432 cases of Covid-19, of which 196,850 have recovered and 131 are still hospitalised.
Covid-19 has caused 5,553,124 deaths worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent assessment by the agency France-Presse.
