U.S. government supports thousands of Mozambican families through GiveDirectly

The Mozambican health authorities on Tuesday reported that the number of recoveries from the Covid-19 respiratory disease continues to outstrip the number of new cases, with the result that the number of active cases of the disease is also declining.
According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, in the previous 24 hours, 2,646 people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19 (744 in Gaza, 545 in Manica, 528 in Maputo city, 464 in Zambezia, 248 in Inhambane, and 117 in Tete).
This brings the total number of recoveries to 173,538, which is 81.5 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,159,478 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 6,200 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of these tests, 4,332 gave negative results, and 1,868 tested positive for the virus.
1,014 of the new cases diagnosed on Tuesday were women, and 852 were men. In two cases, the sex was not given. 259 cases were under the age of 15.
The provinces with the highest number of cases were Maputo city (260 – 14 per cent), and Manica (256 – 13.7 per cent). There were also 227 cases from Nampula, 207 from Maputo province, 188 from Zambezia, 175 from Inhambane, 165 from Gaza, 123 from Sofala, 112 from Niassa, 78 from Cabo Delgado and 77 from Tete.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell from 35.24 per cent on Monday to 30.13 per cent on Tuesday.
In the same 24 hour period, 44 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (14 in Maputo, eight in Inhambane, four each in Niassa, Gaza and Matola, three in Cabo Delgado, three in Nampula, two in Tete and two in Sofala), while 33 new cases were admitted (14 in Maputo, five in Gaza, four in Manica, three in Inhambane, two each in Tete, Zambezia and Matola, and one in Niassa).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 232 on Monday to 217 on Tuesday. 108 of these patients (49.8 per cent) were in Maputo, There were also 18 in Manica, 17 in Nampula, 14 in Sofala, 13 in Zambezia, 13 in Gaza, 11 in Inhambane, eight in Niassa, eight in Matola, four in Tete and three in Cabo Delgado.
The Ministry release also reported a further three deaths from Covid-19. These latest victims were all women aged between 38 and 73. All of them died in Maputo city. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,099.
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 37,999 on Monday to 37,218 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 8,557 (23 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 7,441; Sofala, 3,486; Inhambane, 3,443; Manica, 3,271; Nampula, 2,539; Cabo Delgado, 2,042; Gaza, 1,987; Zambezia, 1,887; Niassa, 1,622; and Tete, 943.
The release also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 129,866 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number of people fully vaccinated against the disease to 7,591,682, while 9,792,465 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
