Mozambique: ‘Up to police to provide answers to crime plaguing country’ – interior minister

Mozambique’s interior minister has challenged the police to provide answers to kidnappings, drug trafficking and terrorism that plague the country, considering that fighting crime requires “educated and trained” personnel.
“It is up to the Sernic [Criminal Investigation Service], as a specialised institution geared towards crime investigation, to provide answers against kidnapping, drug trafficking and terrorism, in particular,” said Arsénia Massingue, speaking on Monday during the celebration of Sernic’s fifth anniversary, marked on Sunday.
According to the minister, preventing and fighting crime requires, on the part of the institution, “properly educated and trained personnel,” acknowledging that the sector’s performance “is very far” from meeting the expectations of Mozambicans.
She suggested the identification of “rogue agents within the corporation” and the application of disciplinary sanctions, as a mechanism for regaining the trust of communities in relation to Sernic’s activities.
“The communities know the criminals, but they will only collaborate if a relationship of mutual trust is established”.
She also noted that kidnappings, drug trafficking and terrorism force the institution to “rethink and adopt new and urgent” response strategies.
“The challenges imposed on the Sernic, especially in the rapid clarification of crimes, requires everyone to be rigorous in observing the rules, employing appropriate techniques and repudiating acts of corruption,” she concluded.
