For the second consecutive day, on Monday the Mozambican health authorities reported many more recoveries from the Covid-19 respiratory disease than new cases.
According to a Monday press release from the Ministry of Health, in the previous 24 hours, 1,802 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 (850 in Nampula, 388 in Sofala, 193 in Inhambane, 189 in Cabo Delgado, and 182 in Maputo province). The total number of recoveries now stands at 170,892, which is 81 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,153,278 people have been tested for the coronavírus that causes Covid-19, 1,680 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of these tests, 1,088 gave negative results, while 592 people tested positive for the virus. This brought the number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique to 210,991.
Of the new cases identified on Monday, 301 were women, 290 were men, and in one case the sex was not stated. 152 of the cases (25.7 per cent) were from Nampula, and 133 were from Maputo city (22.5 per cent). There were also 128 cases from Zambezia, 69 from Inhambane, 64 from Maputo province, 18 from Tete, nine from Gaza, nine from Manica, seven from Sofala, two from Cabo Delgado and one from Niassa.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be carrying the virus) rose from 32.51 per cent on Sunday to 35.24 per cent on Monday.
Over the same 24 hour period, 42 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (26 in Maputo, seven in Inhambane, four in Manica, two in Zambezia, two in Niassa, and one in Matola), while 38 new cases were admitted (21 in Maputo, seven in Inhambane, four in Gaza, two in Zambezia, two in Niassa, one in Matola and one in Cabo Delgado).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 248 on Sunday to 232 on Monday. 112 of these patients (48.3 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 20 in Nampula, 16 in Inhambane, 16 in Sofala, 14 in Manica, 12 in Gaza, 11 in Niassa, 11 in Zambezia, ten in Matola, six in Cabo Delgado and four in Tete.
The Ministry release also reported a further 11 deaths from Covid-19. These were nine men and two women, aged between two and 86 years of age. Eight of the deaths occurred in Maputo city, one in Maputo province, one in Sofala and one in Zambezia. This brought the total death toll from Covid-19 in Mozambique to 2,096.
With the number of recoveries outstripping the number of new cases, the number of active cases of Covid-19 has continued to fall – from 39,220 on Sunday to 37,999 on Monday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 8,350 (21.9 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 7,712; Manica, 3,560; Inhambane, 3,516; Sofala, 3,363; Gaza, 2,566; Nampula, 2,312; Zambezia, 2,163; Cabo Delgado, 1,964; Niassa, 1,510; and Tete, 983.
The release also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 24,688 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brought the number of people fully vaccinated against the disease to 7,446,576 while 9,690,884 had received at least one dose of the vaccine.
