Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) said on Wednesday that it had detained three employees of the Migration Service in the northern city of Nampula who are suspected of setting a fire to burn files that are alleged to contain evidence of their involvement in criminal activities.
The Sernic spokeswoman in Nampula province, Énia Tsinine, told a news conference that the fire took place on 5 December in the offices of the director and the secretary of Napula city’s Migration Service, and destroyed documents and other items on the premises.
Following investigations into the incident, the Sernic spokeswoman added, three officials were detained on suspicion of having hired someone to set the fire.

Before the fire, the three had been under investigation for their alleged involvement in falsifying work visas for foreigners, residence permits for foreigners, and passports.
“It was a thorough investigative job,” said Tsinine. “The source [who reported the case] and Migration [Service] provided us with some data that led to this conclusion.”
