Mozambique: Two persons kidnapped on the same day freed – Lusa

Doctor Basit Gani and businessman Nazir Takdir, both kidnapped in Maputo on the same day, have been released after nearly two months in captivity, official sources told Lusa this Thursday.

The Medical Association of Mozambique confirmed the release of doctor Basit Gani to Lusa, but without significant additional detail.

“We received the information from family members, but we have no other details,” for example, about his health or the date he was released, a source at the medical association said.

Basit Gani, a doctor and vice president of the Mozambican Association of Muslim Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurs, was kidnapped on the morning of 7 October near Eduardo Mondlane University, the oldest higher education institution in the country.

Less than an hour after the doctor was forcibly taken away, businessman Nazir Tadkir was also kidnapped in front of his residence on Friedrich Engels Avenue, which houses several diplomats in the Mozambican capital.

Nazir Tadkir was released last week, Hilário Lole, spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Maputo city, told Lusa today.

“He was released last week. He is back among his family and in good health,” he said.

Doctors demand urgent action on abductions after kidnapping of Basit Gani – O País

Mozambique’s main cities have seen a wave of kidnappings, mainly affecting businessmen and their families, with more than 10 cases in 2020.

The country’s president, Filipe Nyusi, announced in December of last year the possibility of creating a dedicated anti-kidnapping police unit to combat the scourge.

The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique CTA), the country’s largest employers’ association, has on several occasions demanded convincing action on the matter.
