A video that went viral on social networks portrays violence by two agents of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique in the district of Mocuba, Zambézia province.
The video shows two armed, unmasked plain-clothes agents assaulting a woman carrying a baby.
The victim of the ill-treatment is humiliated and successively assaulted by agents until finally being handcuffed by the ankle and forced to walk down the street on one leg.
The PRM in Zambézia has confirmed the basic facts of the incident, indicating that the aggressors were arrested and would be held responsible.
Speaking at a press conference this morning, PRM commander in Zambézia, Aquilasse Manda, revealed that the two agents were not in fact on duty at the time they became involved in the shameful and criminal episode, Diário da Zambézia reports.
Manda said that the incident occurred on December 4, with the two agents apprehending the woman allegedly because she was ‘playing a dangerous game’.
But their actions, he said, themselves constituted a crime, and the corporation distanced itself from such behaviour. Manda said that the two agents were currently detained, and that criminal and disciplinary cases had been opened against them.
