Mozambican authorities have recently confirmed the sending of invitations to former US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Chester Crocker, former British prime minister Tony Blair’s Faith Foundation and former Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete, to mediate peace talks in Mozambique.
A government source has since told VOA that both the Tanzanian statesman and the Faith Foundation have responded positively to the invitation, and that they are still waiting for a response from Mr Crocker.
“Theses are personalities who, while not still in power, have good reputations in their own countries,” the source said, explaining that the government’s choice balanced Renamo’s invitation to the European Union, the Catholic church and South Africa to propose mediators.
The same source pointed out that the Americans have interests in Mozambique, exemplified by, for example, Anadarko’s participation in the Rovuma basin, and the British likewise. The government believes that American and British mediators “will be impartial in this process”.
Some have however found the invitation to Chester Crocker puzzling, since his involvement in the Mozambique peace process at a time in the past when conflict with Renamo was more intense was not welcomed.
