Three people died and 12 were injured as a result of a road accident along the National Highway Number One (EN1), which links the south to the north of Mozambique, a police source told Lusa on Wednesday.
The accident, a collision, occurred on Tuesday night, involving a heavy goods vehicle and a passenger van. The vehicles were travelling in opposite directions, said Carminia Leite, police spokeswoman in Maputo province.
“The cause of the accident was speeding on the part of the goods vehicle,” she said, adding that the driver is on the run.
The 12 injured, 11 of whom are in a serious condition, are being treated at Hospital Geral José Macamo, on the outskirts of Maputo.
This is yet another accident that occurred at a time when road accidents in Mozambique are a concern to the authorities, mainly in the south of the country, after two serious accidents that killed a total of 50 people on the EN1 in the last four months, with others also occurring during this period that resulted in deaths.
The road accident situation in Mozambique is described by several NGOs as dramatic.
On average, at least a thousand people die each year in road accidents on Mozambican roads, according to data provided to Lusa in May by the Mozambican association for road accident victims (Amviro).
