Mozambique: More than 200 industrial units reopened in Cabo Delgado
Notícias
Cement production in Mozambique is expected to increase this year from just over two million tonnes to around 5.3 million following large investments in the industry.
Three new factories are due to open before the end of the year with 130 million dollars being invested in the facilities. The new factories are CIF-Moz and Limak Cements, in the southern province of Maputo, and Fabrica Cimentos de Cabo Delgado in the north of the country.
Limak Cements is owned by the Turkish company Limak Holding, whilst CIF-Moz is owned by the China International Fund.
At the end of June, the Mozambican government introduced new regulations covering the production and importation of cement. Speaking about the new regime, the national director of industry, Mateus Matusse, told the daily newspaper “Noticias” that the cement sector has been growing rapidly in recent years both in terms of output and in respect to licencing requests.
He added that the demand for cement from the construction industry is the instrumental factor in attracting investors to the cement sector. Thus, Mozambique has seen the doubling of the number of new plants over the last four years.
The country now has eleven factories with the main supplier being Cimentos de Mocambique (Cement of Mozambique) which has production facilities in Maputo, Sofala, and Nampula. Cimentos de Mocambique is 82.4 per cent owned by the Brazilian cement giant InterCement.
The other cement producers are S&S Cimentos, Sunera, Cimentos Nacional, Adil Cimentos, Austral Cimentos, Cimentos da Beira and Maputo Cement and Steel.
Matusse revealed that, in order to protect the cement industry, the government has applied a surcharge of 10.5 per cent on imports. He added that other forms of protection included in the new regulations cover certification requirements such as packaging and expiry dates.
