Kenya on Saturday officially opened its High Commission in Maputo marking what the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls “an important step in the deepening of the ties between the two countries”.
At the opening ceremony, the Kenyan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Raychelle Omamo, cut the ribbon at the chancery. Witnessing the ribbon ceremony was her Mozambican counterpart, Veronica Macamo.
Speaking after the inauguration, Macamo noted that the event follows the signing of a General Cooperation Agreement between the two countries which took place on 18 November in the coastal resort of Vilankulo, in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane, where Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta had attended the “Growing Blue” conference.
She stressed that this “reflects the excellent relations of friendship and solidarity between our two peoples and governments, as well as the common desire to strengthen and deepen our bilateral cooperation for the economic and social prosperity of our countries”.
Macamo explained that the General Cooperation Agreement establishes the general framework for bilateral cooperation and paves the way for the signing of memoranda of understanding to boost cooperation in the political-diplomatic, defence and security, economic, and socio-cultural areas.
She added, “we believe that the opening of the Kenya High Commission in Maputo will streamline, strengthen, dynamize, and deepen the excellent relations of friendship and cooperation between the two peoples and governments, on a basis of equality and mutual benefit″.
The Mozambican minister pointed out that Mozambique and Kenya are sister countries lying along the Indian Ocean and sharing many of the same governance challenges. In particular, she mentioned sustainable development, peace and stability, global warming, and, above all, the fight against terrorism, radical extremism, and maritime piracy. For Macamo, these challenges will be overcome through the continuous strengthening of relations of friendship and cooperation.
For her part, Raychelle Omamo stressed that the opening of the Kenyan High Commission in Mozambique has reinvigorated relations that have existed between the two countries since the 1990s.
She added that she hopes that with the strengthening of relations, the two countries will fight for a united Africa which is economically and politically strong and linked through friendship, history, and culture. In addition, she stressed her hope that the founding of the chancery “will allow us to open more business in the region″.
