Coal production by mining company Vale in Mozambique exceeded one million tonnes in October, breaking a record of over three years, at a time when the company announced it was leaving the country.
“October was marked by a strong operating performance of mining activity, with production exceeding, in one month alone, over a million tonnes of metallurgical and thermal coal processed,” Brazil’s Vale said in a statement.
According to Leonardo Xerinda, executive manager of the operation, the result reflects the recent upgrading works.
The record production comes just days after COP-26, a climate conference that softened the call to end the use of coal, Mozambique’s main export.
Vale announced at the beginning of the year that it is leaving the country, justifying its decision on environmental grounds.
The mining company is looking to sell the Moatize operation, in line to reduce its carbon emissions, given that coal is one of the main sources on a global scale.
