Cement production in Mozambique looks set to increase to 5.3 million tons per year with the commissioning of three new cement plants, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has announced.
In a statement sent to Lusa, the ministry says that the US$130 million (EUR117.2 million) invested in three new cement factories will increase national production by over two million tons.
“We had capacity to produce around two thousand tons per day, and now we can make four thousand,” National Industry Director Abelardo is quoted as saying.
Mozambique currently has 11 cement plants, including Cimentos de Mozambique, majority-owned by Portuguese-Brazilian Cimpor. Interest from national and international investors has increased due to momentum in the country’s construction sector, the statement said.
Matusse confirmed that a surcharge of 10.5 percent on imported cement had been introduced to protect national production.
