Mozambique’s head of state, Filipe Nyusi, has removed Jaime Neto from his post as Defence Minister, the country’s presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement did not reveal details about the reasons but said it was a decision taken in the light of “paragraph a of article 159, number 2 of the Constitution of the Republic”.
Although without a military career, Jaime Neto, a teacher and environmentalist, took up the portfolio in January 2020, as part of Filipe Nyusi’s new government after the general elections in October 2019.
On Tuesday, the Mozambican head of state dismissed Amade Miquidade as Interior Minister, according to a statement from the Presidency, which also did not provide details about the reasons for the decision.
Still on Tuesday, the President dismissed Adelaide Amurane from the post of Minister in the President’s Office.
During the closing of the training courses for sergeants of the Armed Defence Forces, today in Maputo province, Filipe Nyusi said that a process of restructuring the Defence and Security Forces was underway, aimed at strengthening the “core” that will ensure the “maintenance of the victories” that Mozambique, with the support of the forces of Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has achieved in the fight against armed groups in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.
