According to the Mozambican health authorities, after two days when no fatalities were reported, the Covid-19 respiratory disease claimed another victim on Tuesday.
He was a 52 year old Mozambican man, who died in the southern province of Inhambane. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 1,929.
According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 936,296 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,000 of them in the previous 24 hours. 983 of the tests yielded negative results, and 17 people tested positive for the coronavirus – a substantial increase on Monday’s figures, when only one person had tested positive.
Of the cases identified on Tuesday, 11 were men and six were women. Three were children under the age of 15 and one was over 65 years old. Six of the new cases were from Maputo city, four from Inhambane, two from Cabo Delgado, two from Niassa, and one each from Nampula, Zambezia and Manica. No positive cases were reported from the other four provinces.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Tuesday was 1.7 per cent – much higher than Monday’s rate of 0.2 per cent, or Sunday’s of 0.6 per cent.
In the same 24 hour period, two Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (in Inhambane and Niassa), and no new cases were admitted. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities fell from 11 on Monday to eight on Tuesday. Five of these patients were in Maputo, and the others were in Niassa, Zambezia and Manica. No Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in any of the other seven provinces.
The Ministry release also reported that on Tuesday a further 313 people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19, all of them in Maputo city. The total number of recoveries now stands at 148,979, or 98.5 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 628 on Monday to 331 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Nampula, 180 (54.4 per cent of the total); Cabo Delgado, 68; Maputo city, 34; Zambezia, 11; Niassa, nine; Inhambane, nine; Maputo province, eight; Manica, six; Gaza, four; and Sofala, two. Tete remains the only province where there are no active cases of Covid-19.
The Ministry also announced that in the previous 24 hours 158,521 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. 1,989,618 people have been fully vaccinated against the disease, and 2,542,164 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
