Former President of Mozambique Armando Guebuza will lead the African Union observation mission to the presidential elections in Sao Tome and Principe on the 17th of this month, the office of former head of state announced yesterday.
The 25 observers were chosen from members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the AU, staff of the organization itself, Pan-African Parliament members, African election management bodies, civil society organisations working in the area of democracy and governance in Africa and independent electoral experts.
“In the letter of invitation addressed to the former President of Mozambique, the African Union reaffirms that the choice of Armando Emílio Guebuza is due to his extensive experience and commitment in strengthening peace and democracy in Africa,” the statement reads.
In October 2015, Armando Guebuza, who ended his second term as Mozambican president at the beginning of the same year, headed the observer mission of the AU to the general elections in Tanzania.
There are five candidates in the Sao Tome elections: the current President, Manuel Pinto da Costa, the former prime ministers Maria das Neves (supported by MLSTP-PSD) and Evaristo de Carvalho (supported by ADI), economist Hélder Barros and biologist Manuel do Rosario.
