A man, apparently about 40 years old, died late on Thursday afternoon after falling from a building in the centre of Maputo city. Witnesses suspect the death was suicide.
The individual in question fell onto the balcony of the second floor of a building located on Zedekias Manganyela Avenue, in the country’s capital. Residents suspect that the individual took his own life, as he had his face covered with a handkerchief and was carrying a bottle of alcoholic beverage, which it is supposed he drank before falling to his death.
Ilda Vitorino, a maid in a house on the second floor of the building, said that she was working inside the house when she heard a crash from outside.
She said that she only realised that a person was falling when she was alerted by the children who were playing on the balcony the victim fell on to. Residents do not know which floor the individual fell from.
“Suddenly, we heard a noise, then we went out to find out what was happening. We don’t even know where he was,” the frightened maid said.
Residents said the individual is not known in the building but had been seen frequenting the site several times prior to the incident.
“We didn’t recognise the man, nor were the guards able to tell who it was,” one resident of the building said.
The victim’s body was removed by agents of the National Criminal Investigation Service, who are responsible for investigating the incident. Up until the time ‘O País’ departed the scene, no relative of the deceased had appeared, suggesting that he did not in fact reside in the building.
