Mozambique: SADC forces are “fully operational” – AIM report

The mission of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Mozambique (known by the acronym SAMIM) has claimed that it is “fully operational” in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
A statement from SAMIM, clearly reacting to claims on social media that most of the fighting against ISIS terrorists in Cabo Delgado is being done by Rwandan forces, assured the people of Mozambique and other SADC member states, that it has “undertaken operations within our area of responsibility, designed in strict coordination with the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM)”.

It stressed the “collective undertaking” to make Cabo Delgado “peaceful, stable and safe”.
The SAMIM statement added that, as a result of the actions of the SADC forces, a terrorist hideout at Muera, south of Mbau, in Mocimboa da Praia district, was seized last Saturday. SAMIM captured one terrorist, several vehicles and an unspecified amount of weaponry and documents.
SAMIM says it handed the captured man over to the FADM, and is sharing the documents with other members of the anti-terrorist coalition for intelligence purposes.
“The SAMIM forces were launched by SADC and by the host nation on 9 August, and they have now reached full operational capacity as well as some successes”, it added.
SAMIM recalled that its mandate is to support Mozambique in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, neutralising the threat, and restoring security. SAMIM is also to provide aerial and maritime support in order to improve the operational capacities of the FADM, in the drive to restore law and order to the affected areas of Cabo Delgado.
The note added that SAMIM is working with non-military actors, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Cabo Delgado provincial capital, Pemba.
