The National Directorate of Civil Identification (DNIC) summoned the press this Thursday to announce that it will initiate online booking for the issuing of identity cards (BI) in Maputo and Matola from next Monday (Aug 23).
According to DNIC spokesperson Alberto Sumbana, the initiative comes in response to COVID-19 prevention measures aimed at reducing crowding in public institutions.
It is not yet known how many people are to be assisted per day, but the user must log on to the DNIC website, www.dnic.co.mz and select the day and time that he/she wishes to be assisted.
The site may in response indicate other days and times available, or reject requests on the basis of the numbers who have already requested bookings. The DNIC has not yet said how many clients will be seen per day.
Online booking in other provincial capitals may gradually be implemented, but no date has yet been given for this.
DNIC seeks partners to issue identity documents to IDPs
The National Directorate of Civil Identification acknowledges that the more than 800,000 displaced people (IDPs) do not have identity documents, and says that they are mobilising economic agents with the aim of raising money to issue replacement identity cards.
Many of the IDPs were forced out of their homes. Some saw family members murdered by terrorists, and escaped with little but their lives. Currently, the adjective ‘displaced’ is practically synonymous with not having an identity card.
Alberto Sumbana says there is still no definitive date for issuing IDs to victims of terrorism in the reception centres, since much depends on the good will of economic agents.
Sumbana also notes that terrorism has dictated the suspension of routine identity document issuing in the Mocímboa da Praia, Palma and Macomia districts of Cabo Delgado province.
