Malawi 24 titles this article: ‘Mozambique detains bus with Malawians’
Malawians who were travelling to Blantyre Malawi on Intercape bus are desperately stranded in Mozambique after their bus was stopped from leaving the country.
The bus was stopped because it hit and killed a pedestrian in Mozambique. The vehicle left South Africa on Tuesday and hit the pedestrian before Zambezi River in Mozambique around 9am Wednesday.
A passenger who was in the bus told Malawi24 that the pedestrian was knocked down when he was trying to cross the road.
According to her, the driver did not stop at the scene of the accident fearing that onlookers might torch the bus.
But Mozambican police were alerted and they later stopped the bus. By 9am on Thursday, the passengers were still stranded in Mozambique where they are under police protection. So far, no passenger has been attacked by locals.
The development comes at a time that there have been reports of violence targeted against Malawian vehicles transiting through Mozambique.
Last month, trucks carrying Malawian fuel were set ablaze in the neighbouring country in the civil war currently ongoing in Mozambique.
